Tyninghame seashore walk

Join the Restoration Forth team in Tyninghame Bay to explore the four “S”: seagrass, seaweed, shells and seashore plants. You will learn how to spot different species along the seashore and how you may contribute to various citizen science projects. Find out about restoration plans for this area and how you can get involved.

Route

The walk will start and finish at the edge of the Tyninghame beach carpark (where the walk through the woods starts), taking participants on a return journey along Tyninghame Bay. The walk will vary depending on the wildlife around and the particular interests of the participants, but a variety of species and habitats will be explored and discussed.

What do you need to bring?

We will be spending some time on the water’s edge so wellies or waterproof shoes are highly recommended. Please ensure that you bring warm, waterproof clothing appropriate for the weather outside, a drink, and any medication you may need. If you are able to do so, we also recommend that you download the iNaturalist and the SeagrassSpotter apps on your phone, however it is not compulsory.

Accessibility

Please note there are no toilets facilities on Tyninghame beach and the paid car park can get very busy. Parking fees are £2.50 per day for each vehicle.

We will be on the move for around 120 minutes during this walk, and the route includes some gentle slopes, uneven sand, rocky ground, and slippy surfaces. We will always try to adjust the pace and the route to make sure that everyone is comfortable, but please let us know in advance if you have questions or concerns about the distance or the route. You can direct queries to seagrassofficer@seabird.org

This walk is open to all but all children 16 and under must be accompanied by an adult.

Keeping everyone safe

Our group leader is a trained first aider and will be carrying a first aid kit and mobile phone.
