We’re looking for a voluntary Youth Ambassador to join our Communications Team! As our Youth Ambassador, you will gain experience creating content for a national conservation charity and assist our team with events and activities. You’ll also have the opportunity to land on the incredible Bass Rock (an island which is home to the world’s largest colony of Northern gannets). We particularly encourage applications from young people aged between 16 and 24 who live in Scotland and have a strong interest in marine wildlife and conservation.
What is the Scottish Seabird Centre?
The Scottish Seabird Centre is a conservation and education charity which aims to inspire and engage people of all ages, abilities and backgrounds to connect with the marine environment and take action to protect it. Opened in 2000, the Centre is now the recipient of multiple national awards and is famous for providing an excellent experience to visitors from its stunning location overlooking the Firth of Forth. A leader in scientific communication and education, the charity is an important voice for marine ecosystems in Scotland. You can find out more about the charity here.
What does the role involve?
The Youth Ambassador will:
- Contribute a minimum of 1 piece of original social media content each month, (although more would be welcomed!). The content you create could include relevant photography, artwork, videos or animations. You might want to showcase your own work as a young person with an interest in the marine environment, highlight interesting or exciting marine wildlife in your area, or share opportunities you find with others.
- Create at least 3 short blogs, vlogs, or podcasts during the 12-month position. These can form part of the monthly social media content outlined above. You can read some of our existing blogs and listen to our podcasts here.
- Assist with at least 4 of our events or conservation activities (online or in person). This will provide you with an opportunity to gain hands-on conservation skills and share your practical experiences with our online audience.
We’re looking for someone who:
- Has a passion for nature, particularly for marine wildlife and habitats.
- Is a confident communicator, able to inspire people through written communication channels.
- Can produce engaging and relevant content for social media, in line with the Scottish Seabird Centre’s brand.
- Is happy to share/boost some of the content created via their own channels.
- Is creative and innovative.
- Is organised with good time management.
- Is eager to work hard, learn from others and develop skills.
- Has an Instagram following of 500 people or more (desirable but not essential).
What’s in it for you?
- A voucher for a Bass Rock landing trip, worth £135.
- Reasonable travel expenses (over 12 months) for attendance at events and travel to North Berwick for the Bass Rock landing trip.
- Experience creating content for a national conservation charity.
- The opportunity to raise the profile of your own social media pages.
- CV support and interview training for careers in the conservation sector.
- A progress tracker which will allow you to record the content that you create and how audiences engage with it.
