Have you ever thought about wanting to do more to help our seas? There are an unbelievable number of projects to get involved with, and many amazing organisations providing the foundation and toolkits to facilitate these activities. Join Charlotte Keeley, Project Officer from Berwickshire Marine Reserve, to take a deeper dive into some of the ongoing projects, discover why they are so important and, most importantly, find out how you can get involved.
Scotland is home to some of the most diverse and ecologically rich marine environments in Europe - from kelp forests and cold-water coral reefs to vital nurseries for seabirds and marine mammals. But these ecosystems face increasing threats from climate change, pollution, and overexploitation. Marine conservation is essential to protect these habitats, and citizen science plays a key role in driving change. By involving local communities, coastal users, and volunteers in monitoring and protecting the marine environment, we build stronger connections to our seas—and empower people to become stewards of Scotland’s natural heritage.
After growing up in landlocked London, Charlotte discovered her true passion for the marine environment when she learned to scuba dive back in 2018. After numerous diving trips to Scotland, in particular Eyemouth and St Abbs, she fell in love with the area and made the big move up in 2022. She joined the Berwickshire Marine Reserve (BMR) in 2023 as the Head Ranger, overseeing the Summer Rangers as well as all of their summer events and activities. Come March 2024, she started her new role as Project Officer, an exciting opportunity to help develop BMR's community engagement and volunteering opportunities, and ultimately share her passion for protecting and conserving our seas with more people! Charlotte has also participated in Young Sea Changers Scotland's 'Turning the Tide' programme - an incredible opportunity to learn and engage with marine policy and empower young people to have a voice within this space.
