Walk & Talk: Marine Wildlife & Climate Change

Join our Conservation Officer for a relaxing 1 hour wildlife walk along the coast to find out more about the seabirds, shorebirds, and cetaceans that can be spotted around Scotland during the summer and autumn months. Then head into our Learning Hub for a talk about climate change and how this is impacting marine wildlife, habitats, and communities around the world. Everyone is welcome to ask questions, share their knowledge and experiences, or simply unwind and enjoy the wildlife.

These walks are for adults (16+) and cost £7.50 per person (£6.75 for Scottish Seabird Centre silver members, £6 for gold members). This money is gratefully received and will go towards supporting our education and conservation work around Scotland.

Friday 5th November, 10.00-11.30
Please read the event description carefully before buying a ticket

Route

The walk will start and finish outside the Scottish Seabird Centre, taking participants on a return journey along Milsey Bay Beach up to Haugh Road Beach. Walks will vary depending on the wildlife around and the particular interests of the participants, but a variety of species and habitats will be explored and discussed.

What will we provide?

Binoculars (for the duration of the walk), wildlife ID sheets, a citizen science information leaflet, alcohol hand-gel (if needed).

What do you need to bring?

Walking boots or shoes, clothing appropriate for the weather outside, a drink, any medication you may need, a face covering (which will be worn during the indoor talk, unless exempt), a mobile phone, sun protection.

Accessibility

Unfortunately, this walk is not suitable for wheelchair users or pushchairs (unless using a beach wheelchair - more information available here: https://www.beachwheelchairs.org/). The walk is around 3km – please consider whether this is a manageable distance for you before booking. It is mostly easy-going and flat (along the beach).

Keeping everyone safe

We are running these walks in-line with COVID-19 guidelines. A maximum of 12 people will be present on each walk (including the group leader), and appropriate safety measures will be taken throughout, including the thorough cleaning/quarantining of equipment before each use. We ask that all participants maintain social distancing from each other (if from different households), and wear masks when collecting equipment or unable to maintain distancing.

Our group leader is a trained first aider and will be carrying a first aid kit and mobile phone. A copy the risk assessment for these walks can be viewed in the event description on our website.

What if my walk is cancelled?

If this event is cancelled due to poor weather conditions, we will get in touch with you the day before to let you know. You will be refunded.
