Sketching by the Seaside

Learn how to quickly capture the world around you in ink and watercolour with the Edinburgh Sketcher.

On this 2.5 hour sketching tour, you will learn sketching skills with Mark, also known as the Edinburgh Sketcher. You'll get started using ink pens and watercolour washes, drawing shells and items found on the shore, before heading out to capture the stunning East Lothian views. Mark will share tips and techniques he has picked up over a decade of sketching around Edinburgh.

The session will touch on details, shading, depth and composition as you go from 5 minute exercises to relax the hand and work on composition, to a 30 minute detailed vista as you walk around the harbour.

You will start and finish at the Scottish Seabird Centre Learning Hub where you will have room to finish our watercolours and mount a favourite piece.

This workshop is accessible for all levels from beginners to those who would like to learn more about Mark's speed-sketching style, or to practice more relaxed mark making with ink and watercolour.

Suitable for adults and older children. The minimum age is 8 years old, and anyone aged 8-15 needs to be accompanied by a ticket holding adult.
